Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to help you implement the critical reading and thinking skills and strategies necessary to the practice of persuasive research writing. Because the focus of this class is the process of learning how to argue effectively on paper, you will have the opportunity to develop an awareness of audience by writing multiple drafts, which will include well-documented, credible research sources.

I. Understand And Employ Productive Writing Process

  • Find topics that are personally meaningful and fun to work on
  • Begin writing in time to do multiple drafts
  • Think of and refine topics in a variety of ways
  • Make use of response from instructors, peers, and the Writing Center
  • Revise extensively, keeping in mind audience, purpose, genre, form, and style
  • Proofread with spell checkers and human editors
  • Work collaboratively
  • Hone evaluation skills through peer response groups, interactive online communication, and work in the Writing Center.

II. Develop Critical Reading, Thinking, Viewing, And Listening Skills And Strategies

  • Analyze arguments using logical strategies
  • Identify logical fallacies and faulty reasoning
  • Discern bias and manipulation
  • Construct logical and creative arguments supported by primary and secondary sources
  • Identify author’s purpose
  • Recognize patterns of logic
  • Use close, careful analysis supported by research to develop a position
  • Choose the best source, not the most readily available
  • Evaluate source credibility
  • Examine the types of evidence and writing preferred in different disciplines
  • Explore how a writer’s culture and background influence the writer’s work

III. Use Research To Understand And Communicate About A Subject

  • Develop a working bibliography
  • Broaden, narrow, or deepen a search as needed
  • Learn where to look for material: the library, the Internet, experts….
  • Analyze the validity and reliability of Internet sources
  • Learn how to develop and use primary sources
  • Differentiate between primary and secondary sources and when to use each
  • Use scholarly works to support a position
  • Conduct interviews and gather data via e-mail

IV. Practice The Appropriate Use Of Documentation

  • Learn why, when, and how to document, quote, paraphrase, and summarize
  • Understand research ethics and integrity
  • Create a bibliography or works-cited page using a particular style sheet
  • Create an effective annotated bibliography or review of literature

V. Incorporate Audience Awareness Into All Writing

  • Develop a clear and focused thesis statement to engage an intended audience
  • Target persuasive writing to a variety of specific audiences
  • See issues from a specific audience’s point of view
  • Effectively identify audience values and assumptions, and direct arguments accordingly
  • Use understanding of the opposition’s position to create effective arguments
  • Produce persuasive, documented material directed to a specific audience
  • Adapt the tone, purpose, evidence, and organization to the audience
  • Practice writing to achieve consensus, not victory

VI. Develop Presentations Based On Research

  • Turn research material into interesting and effective presentations
  • Use graphs, charts, and multi-media effectively in the presentation
  • Analyze needs and expertise of the target audience
  • Refine oral presentation skills such as eye contact, voice modulation, and delivery
  • Incorporate contemporary document design principles into papers and presentations

VII. Use Multi-Media Resources Effectively

  • Use charts, graphs, and other illustrations to complement writing or speech
  • Use a variety of media sources to prepare presentation materials like computer-generated charts, graphs, and illustrations
  • Use video and audio clips, overhead projectors, CD-ROMs, and Power Point

VIII. Continue Developing Writing Skills

  • Learn how to choose enjoyable and productive approaches to a variety of writing tasks
  • Organize writing for clarity, coherence, and readability
  • Select precise words and omit needless ones
  • Learn when and how to include opinions and experiences
  • Weave together ideas, facts, and opinions from a variety of sources
  • Use sentence structure, style, and voice appropriate for the purpose and audience
  • Punctuate to clarify meaning
  • Use standard edited English and understand the issue of “correctness”
